Chinese New Years Eve

On New Years Eve it is traditional for Chinese family members to get together for a special meal but our friends were not able to visit their parents so kindly invited us round to share Yusheng last week.
This dish is the Singaporean version of the Cantonese dish and is also known as Prosperity Salad as it is meant to symbolise 'an abundance of wealth and long life'.
Here's KK adding the ingredients -white radish, grated carrot, and other shredded vegetables, pickled ginger, sweet plum sauce, cinnamon and spices.
Then on the top some; strips of raw fish (salmon) and 'golden pillows' aka little crackers
When all ingredients are ready it's time for everyone to dig in, mixing everything together with their chopsticks whilst calling out "Lo Hei" an auspicious phrase to bring good fortune and long life. It is believed that the higher you toss the salad the greater your fortune will be in the coming year.

We gave it a good go and needless to say lots of the salad landed outside the bowl, however it was delicious.
Following this we had 'hot pot', made in an electrically heated pot at the table. We added vegetables, meats, prawns and fish and cooked the ingredients together. This reminded me a bit of an alpine meat fondue but was healthier as had vegetables and was cooked in a broth not oil.

Breaking with tradition we had a Swedish desert (made by DL) Mandelmousse, little tart cases filled with cream and topped with raspberry coulis, they were scrummy.

So happy Chinese New Year everyone.
