In the converted front room of a lovely shophouse in the heart of Balestier, Singapore I joined some friends at an Upcycling Workshop the other evening and it was such fun. I'm not particularly 'arty' but I enjoy crafts and it's always satisfying to create something, well that is unless it's a disaster in which case it can be very unsatisfying!
Following clear instructions by our patient mentor James Handle of Portobello Reclaimed, www.portobello.com.sg we turned an unloved scruffy former foodcourt stool into a piece of beauty and all whilst sipping wine and eating delicious nibbles.
James had already prepped the stools by sanding them down so once we had chosen our base coat and contrast colour from the wide range of beautiful colours, we set to work carefully painting the stools, first the legs and undersides and then finally the top.
The paint was quite easy to work with so long as we followed the simple instruction to have only a little bit on our brush as a 'little bit went a long way'.
Once the paint had dried- luckily we had the wine and nibbles and James' gorgeous 9 week old little kitten to keep us amused...
We placed the stencil on the top and James demonstrated the technique before we then tapped on the contrast colour. It was quite exciting as we each peeled off the stencils to reveal our works of art.
We all felt very pleased with our finished piece and agreed that we will enjoy using them at home
