March 1st-15th 2014 First Impressions
Moving to Singapore was always going to be a major life change. I was leaving behind most of my family, my friends, my home & garden, my pets, my job and the outdoor life style and hobbies I loved so almost as soon as we landed I was hunting for what Singapore could offer. Of course the first thing that struck me was the incredible heat and humidity, not just during the day but at night as well, it just never lets up!
Many people told me what green city Singapore is but I doubted that! There is construction going on almost everywhere, huge cranes building huge buildings.
The first "plant life" I saw was this statue of a nutmeg outside Ion Mall on Orchard Road
Then there are the huge multi-coloured metal "Supertrees" in The Gardens by the Bay, striking indeed but not "green". Although I had to admit the gardens around this area are beautifully planted and the two flower domes looked well worth a visit.
Then a brief trip to the Botanical Gardens started to reassure me that there could be some green places to discover after all. I have a feeling I'm going to spend a lot of time in these gardens.
An evening trip to the Island of Sentosa rewarded us with a lovely walk on the beach and a beautiful sunset, (you just have to ignore the super tankers in the background and)
So having been reassured that trees and flowers and even nature can be found here we went to see some of Singapore's famous sights.
The Art Science Museum |
We caught the amazing iLight festival, lots of art pieces spread out the Marina Bay area |
One highlight in the second week had to be standing under the awesome Marina Bay Sands to watch the live screening of the Rolling Stones concert going on inside. We even saw all the band members for a few minutes when they cam out to say hello to the crowd before the concert. .
N and H getting into concert mode!
So it was looking like I would be still able to continue to enjoy my love of nature and the outdoors whilst living here but there was also going to be some new and exciting experiences to be had in Singapore too.
