March 2014
One of the first things I did was to join the BA, the British Association, it seemed to be a good way of meeting people and it organises all sorts of activities including walking, tennis, tours around Singapore, pub nights & playing mahjong to name a few. We spotted that there was a trip coming up "Kayaking around the island of Pulau Ubin" so we signed up.
Pulau Ubin lays just off the coast and is possibly the only undeveloped part of Singapore left. It felt like we were stepping into a very different world.

Meeting up at Changi Ferry Terminal |
As you step on board the "bum boat" it feels like you are stepping back in time to a much less developed and calmer Singapore that still exists just 10 minutes ride away from the mainland. |
No frills like seat cushions, maybe its called a bum boat as you certainly feel evey wave sitting on the hard bench seats |
Chugging along with a noisy engine |
Lots of boats all shapes and sizes take visitors to nearby shores including Indonesia in the background |
Arriving at the jetty, mangroves in sight |
The men discussing tactics! |
Ready for our adventure |
Looking for otters, we were thrilled to briefly catsch a glimpse of two lovely otters. |
Quietly slipping into the mangrove swamps hoping for some shade! |
Out into the straits towards the floating fishing villages, known as Kelongs, sea eagle flying towards us. |
Feeling very hot and fully exposed to the sun now |
Hauling out the very heavy kayaks |
On the way back hot, sunburnt, achey arms and shoulders but very happy after a great day out. We finished off with a tasty meal at the Changi Village food court but I was unable to take any photos as my camera had run out of battery.
Although we didn't have time to explore the interior of the island we enjoyed the day immensely and will definitely come back to see more of Pulau Ubin. |
