We had heard that there are some lovely murals in Penang, some are marked on the tourist map some we just chanced upon. It all started in 2012 with a street art project called Mirrors Georgetown when the artist Ernest Zacharevic was commisioned to paint 6 murals. Many more pieces have since "appeared" by different artists. Some have been named which I've included but not all.
'Love me like your fortune cat'
'Children playing basketball'
'Trishaw man' This must be one of the largest murals, it takes up the side of an entire building, facing a car park.
'Old motorcycle'
Even a pipe is turned into a piece of art
'The real Bruce Lee would never do that'
N. taking a dinosaur for a walk!
'Learn to speak Hokkien'
'Magic'
'Reaching up'
'Kids on a bicycle'
I think this was my favourite mural, the sheer delight on the children's faces are glorious and make me smile every time I look at it-it's become my screensaver
'Skippy' -reminded me of our lovely ginger cat; Louis who is almost as big as this!
'Brother and sister on a swing'
'I want bao!'
'Kung fu girl' this is possibly Ernest Zacharevic's most famous mural in Penang. It's also known as 'Little Girl in Blue' which seems a bit odd as 'she' is at least 30ft tall
This piece was not finished, the artists were setting up a 'cherry picker' and had pots of paint, getting ready to paint some more
Wandering around the streets looking for these murals was great fun but thirsty work on a hot day. Luckily there are lots of places to stop for a cool drink and recover and the people watching was fascinating too.We loved our relaxing weekend in Penang and hope to go back sometime as there is plenty more to do, maybe next time we might catch a boat from Singapore and cruise there, that could be fun.
